A display mounted on the wall is the visible part of an AV installation. The performance people remember, however, is determined much earlier: where the equipment lives, how the network is built, whether cables were planned before walls close, and how easily the system can be controlled. This AV system design guide focuses on those decisions, helping homeowners, builders, and business owners plan AV that works as part of a connected property rather than as a collection of isolated devices.

Start the AV system design guide with the experience

Before selecting a television, projector, speakers, or control platform, define what each space needs to do. A family room may need simple streaming, television audio, and discreet speakers. A dedicated media room may require controlled lighting, surround sound, acoustic treatment, and a projector. A boardroom has a different priority: reliable video conferencing, clear speech reinforcement, easy laptop sharing, and a setup that visiting staff can use without technical support.

The right system depends on the room, the users, and the operating routine. A compact soundbar can be appropriate for a secondary bedroom, while it would be a poor fit for a large open-plan living area with high ceilings. Likewise, a commercial display may be more suitable than a consumer television where long daily operating hours, remote management, and landscape or portrait mounting are required.

At this stage, document how the room will be used, where people will sit, typical viewing distances, daylight conditions, and which devices need to connect. This prevents a common design failure: purchasing equipment first, then forcing the room and infrastructure to accommodate it.

Plan infrastructure before selecting equipment

AV reliability begins with physical infrastructure. Wireless technologies are useful, but they should not carry every critical function simply because they are convenient. Fixed displays, network streamers, AV receivers, access points, video conferencing equipment, and distributed audio components benefit from structured cabling and properly designed network connections.

For new builds and major renovations, install conduit to strategic display locations, speaker points, ceiling projector positions, equipment racks, and potential future zones. Conduit provides an upgrade path when HDMI standards, video formats, or client requirements change. Pulling a replacement cable through finished walls is far easier than opening plasterboard, repainting, and disrupting a completed space.

Category cable should be considered beyond the obvious television location. It can support network connectivity, control, audio distribution, video extension, access points, touch panels, and selected cameras or intercom devices. Fiber may also be appropriate for longer runs, electrically noisy commercial environments, or high-bandwidth links between buildings and communications rooms.

Power deserves equal attention. Displays, projectors, motorized screens, subwoofers, network switches, amplifiers, and equipment racks all need correctly located power outlets. A projector location without suitable power or a wall-mounted display with visible power leads is usually evidence that AV and electrical planning occurred separately. Licensed electrical work and AV design should be coordinated from the beginning.

Design an equipment location that can be serviced

Centralizing equipment can deliver a clean result, particularly where multiple sources, amplifiers, matrix switching, network hardware, or control processors are involved. It also creates a practical servicing point. Equipment should not be squeezed into an unventilated cabinet beneath a staircase or placed where technicians cannot access rear connections.

Allow for ventilation, cable management, labeled terminations, suitable rack space, and spare capacity. Heat shortens equipment life and makes intermittent faults more likely. A neat rack is not merely visual polish – it makes support, upgrades, and fault isolation faster.

Not every property needs a large central rack. Smaller systems can keep some devices local to the room. The design decision should reflect cable distances, room count, system complexity, noise considerations, and future expansion rather than following a one-size-fits-all rule.

Treat the network as part of the AV system

Modern AV systems rely on the network for streaming, control, firmware updates, remote support, and integration with security and automation. A premium display connected to unstable Wi-Fi will still feel unreliable. The same applies to multiroom audio that drops out because access point placement, network capacity, or switching has not been considered.

In larger homes and commercial sites, network segmentation can separate business devices, guest access, security cameras, building automation, and AV equipment while still allowing approved control systems to communicate where required.

Wi-Fi access point locations should be planned around building materials, floor levels, outdoor use, and expected device density. Placing an access point inside a metal enclosure or relying on one router at the edge of a large property creates predictable coverage issues. For fixed AV hardware, use wired Ethernet wherever practical and reserve Wi-Fi capacity for mobile devices.

Match audio design to the room, not a product category

Good audio is about intelligibility, coverage, and appropriate sound pressure, not just speaker quantity. In a living room, speaker placement must work with furniture, display position, room dimensions, and the visual finish expected by the owner. In a restaurant, office, warehouse, or retail space, even coverage and zoning often matter more than high-volume playback.

Ceiling speakers are useful for distributed background music and unobtrusive multiroom audio. They are not automatically the ideal solution for a focused movie experience, where front speaker positioning and bass management have a major effect. A dedicated theater may use in-wall or architectural speakers behind an acoustically transparent screen, while a flexible living room may benefit from a carefully integrated surround system with discreet visible speakers.

Consider acoustics early. Hard floors, glass, stone, and high ceilings can create reflections that reduce speech clarity and make audio feel harsh. Rugs, curtains, furnishings, acoustic panels, and speaker selection all influence the result. The goal is not always a studio-like room; it is sound that remains clear and enjoyable for the intended use.

Build useful zones, not unnecessary complexity

Multiroom audio is most valuable when zones reflect how a property is actually used. Kitchen, patio, main living area, primary suite, reception, and meeting rooms may each need independent control. Combining every area into one zone can make operation frustrating, while creating a separate zone for every small space can add cost and control complexity without meaningful benefit.

A well-planned system lets users choose a source, adjust volume, and group rooms when entertaining, while preserving simple local control. These automations should support daily routines, not create surprises.

Make video, lighting, and control work together

The best AV control systems reduce decisions at the point of use. A room should not require multiple remotes, a phone app, and a search for the correct input just to watch a presentation or start a movie. Depending on the system, control may be provided through a dedicated keypad, touch panel, handheld remote, Apple Home interface, Home Assistant dashboard, or a combination of these.

Control should be designed around actions people recognize. Examples include Watch TV, Movie Night, Start Meeting, and All Off. A Movie Night command might lower motorized shades, set DALI-2 lighting to a comfortable level, power the display or projector, select the correct source, and set the audio system to the intended mode. The value is not automation for its own sake. It is predictable operation across several connected systems.

Commercial rooms need particularly clear control logic. A meeting room should default to a known state, provide obvious source connection options, and recover gracefully if a user disconnects a laptop mid-session. Complex automation can be worthwhile in executive spaces or multipurpose venues, but only if staff can operate it confidently.

Allow for growth, support, and change

AV standards move quickly. Displays become larger, streaming requirements change, video conferencing platforms evolve, and property owners alter how rooms are used. Design for change by leaving spare rack capacity, additional cable pathways, available switch ports, and accessible service points.

Documentation is equally valuable. Labeled cables, equipment schedules, network records, and clear control programming notes reduce downtime when a system needs service or expansion. This is especially important for strata, education, healthcare, and commercial properties where multiple stakeholders may rely on the same infrastructure.
